Second Child Syndrome?

In the last week or two, John and I have been noticing how demanding Nate has gotten. I recognized James' attitudes immediately when he was younger, but Nate still seemed like a baby so I would just give him what he wanted to keep him happy.

Suddenly, Nate knows exactly what he wants and thinks it's perfectly acceptable to throw a fit to get it. It is so not ok for a kid his age to be throwing fits already, so John and I are tag-teaming teaching him "please" ASAP! Now, I totally recognize that Nate isn't a helpless baby and is fully capable of having a "happy heart" - as James says.

He hasn't signed please on his own, but I can tell he's starting to pick up what will and what won't get him his way! Lots and lots of consistency and patience and we'll get there.....  :-)

Last month when I was in nursery, this happened.

This month, James had an incident...

Sometimes, John will take James into the service with him if I have nursery and will usually bring him back after the music. Last Sunday, John had James in the service and all of a sudden, James gave him a funny look and threw up all over him. John came and got me and we got him changed and feeling better. We left early and headed home. Since James looked like he was feeling better, I gave him the rest of his milk to drink in the car. 10 minutes later, his carseat and jacket were filled with.... loveliness.

John is a champion at emergency situations. We pulled in the closest grocery store parking lot, stripped James down, pulled everything out of the backseat and wrapped him in blankets. Then I just sat in the back with him on my lap the rest of the way home. Poor guy slept for a little while that afternoon, but was feeling totally fine in a couple hours.

I think I might be cursed in the nursery!

A Few Goodies

Aunt June recently sent John and Reed a bunch of old pictures and they've been really fun to look through! (Thanks Aunt June!!)

John as a baby. I can kind of see some Nate in this picture!

She sent John's birth announcement too. We've never known the exact info of when he was born, so that's fun to have.

There were a few classics of Becca, I love this!

And how cute is this!

Ha ha ha ha!

Does every family have this picture from the 90's!

Naches Camping Trip 2011

Oh boy. Let me set the stage for my very first snow camping trip:  A month or so ago, John and I were talking about how much he loves snow camping and how comfortable it is. He has a great set up - sturdy tent, cot, warm sleeping bag, tent heater, etc... In our conversation, I told him it didn't sound that bad and I might be up for a snow camping trip while I'm not pregnant or with a new kiddo.

In the next couple days he had a trip planned out with some of his jeep buddies! We planned on doing the Naches trail right next to Mt. Rainer.

The general area.

The red is the actual trail.

The plan was to start at Greenwater with the whole group, then Scott and Mike couldn't stay the night so they would finish the trail and head home while Monte, Jessi, John and I would camp over night and spend the next day in the town of Cliffdell. I've never been there (darn, I just gave away the end of the story!), but I've heard they have a great restaurant and some other cool attractions.

Waiting at Monte and Jessi's to leave early in the morning. No, the jeep to the right didn't join us!

We should have known this wouldn't be the best trip ever when all 4 of us were pulled over on one of the back highway roads. It's one of those roads like highway 2 where the speed limit is 55 unless you're going through a rinky-dink town with 1 speed limit sign posted 35. Well, we all missed the sign. I blame Monte, he was our fearless leader.   ;-)   The cop was very generous to us though....

That's Monte on the side of the road in front of us!

Finally up in the snow. This was the last weekend that the trail was open, so there was still not a ton of snow on the ground.

And the mud.... blegh.

We saw this flag and note on the side of the trail. We were kind of concerned that there was someone who needed help or something...

We were wrong.

Mike's big yellow jeep is hidden behind John's jeep.

The view going down one of the *narrow* hills on the trail.

Right after going down that hill, we lost Scott. We waited and waited until finally Monte and John walked back up to check on him. They found him with a dangling steering box FOR THE THIRD TIME. Apparently it's a part that never breaks, in fact, auto shops and dealerships don't even stock steering boxes because they genuinely never break. Scott broke this part twice when the guys did the Rubicon trail last year and it was a huge ordeal and it happened again on this trip. He insists it's a jeep problem, we don't really agree. Lol!  (We really do love Scott, I promise!)  :-)

This is the "seriously?" face.
So we loaded up Scott and his gear in Mike's jeep and they left after only 1.5 hours on the trail.

And then there were three....

The plan was for Scott and Mike to drive the 2.5 hours home, take out Mike's box from his jeep, Scott would find a ride back up to the trail, and John and Monte would help him install the box in the middle of the night.

Our trip was ruined in that we couldn't just leave Scott to fix the jeep himself, so we set up camp just a little ways away and waited for Scott to show up. BUT, we determined not to let that ruin all our fun!

Our campsite. Isn't this a super clear picture! Ha!

Scott left his steak in our cooler, so the guys decided to take care of it for him. The only problem was that the bbq was in Scott's locked jeep, so they had to improvise. Monte opted for the slow-roast-on-a-stick method.

That was too slow for John, so he brought out the blow-torch. Monte choked his very rare steak down, but John's was never cooked enough to eat.

We really did have fun with Monte and Jessi around the fire. We set up camp around 4 in the afternoon and didn't go to bed until at least 11.

Oh, I almost forgot the best part about the night. I use the term "best" loosely! At the last minute back at home, we decided that instead of packing along all the camping gear, we would just sleep in the back of the jeep. We would be warmer, drier, and sleep way better. Wrong. The smaller tent heater didn't heat well and I couldn't get myself to sleep thinking I might knock it over. Our sleeping bags didn't keep us very warm. We both forgot pillows. And, there was so much condensation inside the jeep that we were getting dripped on all night. It was miserable at the time, but now it's kind of funny! Seriously, who does this??

Scott ended up getting lost and almost stuck driving back to the trail around midnight, so he went back to town and got a hotel room until the morning. Jessi and I took his ride back home while the guys stayed and helped him switch out the box.

It was definitely a memorable trip, but unless I somehow develop memory loss, I'm not sure I'll be joining John on any more snow camping trips for a while!

Big Guy James

I hate giving James haircuts. (Well, actually, I love it. But that's a slightly OCD side of me. Not that you'd be able to tell if you look up-close on the hair cut!)

Anyhooo. Haircuts make this 2-YEAR-OLD look like he's ready for kindergarten, dirt bikes, pocket knives, changing the oil, illegal fireworks, driving... etc. All in due time!

<  Hey look. I got "Instagram". I'm cool now!  >

November 11, 2011

Tonight John is gone at the Northview Men's Retreat. (Why I'm up so late!!)

We went to Gracen's 2nd birthday party tonight and I think tomorrow will be a pretty laid-back day (with lots of packing, but that's for a different post, eek!)

Goodnight Daddy! We miss you!

This picture is really blurry, but so darn cute! Love that Nate!!

November 8, 2011

John's cousin is starting up an awesome frozen yogurt place in the Mill Creek Center. We went out to take a look at it Tuesday night and James got really into it... proving how much of a boy he is!

New Toy

We're just now getting to some of the new toys from the boy's birthday. This ball-popper-gum ball-toy is a big hit, and apparently something I need to be in the room for!

November 6, 2011

Sunday morning we participated in the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness 5K. This is the 2nd year that the Carruthers family has done this walk. Last year I had just had a c-section and John was away at Men's Retreat so we weren't able to go but, the walk was a lot of fun and I'm really glad we could do it this year. Go team Wally!!

Getting ready to walk - it was sunny, but SO cold!!

I'm not sure how many people attended this year, but there was a huge crowd and I know they raised around 90K.

About half of our group got separated in the beginning of the race. (Including my children whom I love and adore and would never lose.) So, Uncle Reed and Miss Katie pushed the stroller the whole time!

Hi boys!

The path was absolutely beautiful. We walked all through Magnuson Park in Seattle right next to the water.

One of the best parts was getting to Skype with Becca after the walk. I was sad she couldn't be there, but I'm so glad she could be there in spirit!!

Hi Auntie Becca!

Group photo with almost everyone!

November 5 (Part 2)

This is just audio. It's a typical "conversation" with James. Someday I'll miss this, right??  :)

November 5, 2011

Saturday morning we picked up the boys from Sheri's. We got in the car to go home and John asked if we wanted to take a drive to Leavenworth for lunch. It was such a beautiful day and we had enough diapers, so we headed over the mountains. In hindsight, flip-flops weren't the best choice for this sunny 45* day!

First snow on Stevens Pass!

We ate at our FAVORITE place in Leavenworth, "South". It's fresh Mexican food - similar to "Azul" in Mill Creek. Yumm...

I think James only ate chips and milk!

They were just starting to put up Christmas lights. It was neat to watch the decorating in progress!

James loved watching the "tractors". (Tractors??? We just roll with it.)

For a minute, we let James walk in front of us by himself. John and I just stood back in awe of what a big kid he is these days. He was walking down the sidewalk like he knew what he was doing, no problem!

Me and the Natester, trying to keep warm!

James loved playing in the huge area of leaves. He practiced his "ready, ready, go!" jumping over and over.

Then we went to visit the toy store. SOMEDAY, I want one of those cool puzzles they have displayed in the window! I just love James' face in this picture. It's the: "Hey, Dad, there are so many cool toys here, is this what heaven is like?!"

John did let the boys each choose a tractor to buy. James got a green one and Nate got a yellow one. Two brand new toy tractors: $11. The quiet ride home: Priceless.  :)
