(Thanks to Gail Martin's "hands on the van" advice:) I've always had James "touch the tire" when he's standing by the car and my hands are busy. Yesterday at the park, I was putting some things away and asked James to touch the tire. When I turned around to check on him, he was definitely touching the tire... just the wrong one!
